Refugee accused of raping 10-year-old girl in Manus

MANUS MP Ronny Knight has warned that there could be civil unrest on the island after police arrested and charged a refugee for the alleged rape of a 10-year-old girl.
Knight blamed Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato, the Australian Government, Wilson Security and Broad Spectrum – the company managing the Regional Processing Centre on Manus – for allowing the refugees to roam freely on the island.
“How can you do (rape) that to a 10-year-old child,” Knight told The National on Tuesday.
“My message to them (the Australian Government) is that you broke your agreement in the first place that none of these refugees would interact with the community.”
“They’re not looking after them, they’re not monitoring these people, and they’re not putting them in line.
“They just live the door open and let them (refugees) move freely and my people are suffering.”
“Get them out before my people rise up and something happens.”
Knight said that not all refugees were bad but there were some bad ones among them.
“We agreed to host the regional processing centre but we did not agree to adopt the problem.”
Knight said there were more women and girls who were victims from sexual attacks from foreigners on the island.
But Knight said that they were ashamed to report the matter to police.
He thanked the police for arresting and charging the alleged perpetrators.
According to provincial police commander Senior Inspector, David Yapu, an asylum seeker allegedly raped the 10-year-old old girl at a lodge in Lorengau town.
Yapu said the accused, Muhammad Hussain, 28, from Pakistan was charged with sexual penetration under the Criminal Code Act.
Yapu said the accused allegedly invited the victim and two other girls on March 3 to Kohai Lodge in Lorengau town where he allegedly sexually penetrated the victim four times in the room.
Meanwhile, a Kurdish Iran Journalist Behrouz Boochani, who is detained at the regional processing centrer on Manus, condemned sexual violence against women and children.
“Many of us refugees stand strongly against violence of any kind,” he said.
Boochani said that he and fellow refugees were upset after they heard about the alleged rape incident committed by a refugee.
